Campaign website
Merritt's campaign website stated the following:
“ |
FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE We are going to fight to ensure all Texans can participate in the political process. Republicans have disenfranchised 4 million new Texans through gerrymandering. The AG continues to intimidate black and brown voters through politically motivated prosecutions. PROTECTING WOMEN'S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS Women deserve to be respected and protected by the Constitution, including the right to privacy and personal autonomy. We will fight to protect a women’s right to choose. CONFRONTING THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS We need to confront the mental health crisis. There is an increasing number of citizens who suffer from mental health disorders who are being addressed by more policing when both police and the public are demanding a mental health solution. It is absurd to think we can solve this problem with more policing and violence. We have to find solutions that don’t end in the deaths of those that suffer from mental illnesses. PROTECTING PUBLIC EDUCATION Republican efforts to defund public education must be opposed by the people’s lawyer. As a former teacher, I will always be on the side of educators and local control concerning issues impacting the classroom. CREATING ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE POWER GRID We need to fix the Texas power grid. We saw just how disastrous conditions can get when our leaders refuse to put the time, energy, and funding into our power grid. We lost hundreds of lives during this year’s winter storms that could have been prevented. We need to strengthen our grid and address climate changes causing these life-threatening weather events. ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT We need to create economic empowerment. We must send resources like business loans, grants, jobs, healthcare and counseling to help heal our communities after 50 years of failed “war on drug” policies.[3] |
