Lee Hyman Rosenthal is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. She served as chief judge from 2016 until 2022. She joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. She assumed senior status on December 1, 2024.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Richmond, Indiana, Rosenthal graduated from the University of Chicago with her bachelor's degree in 1974 and the University of Chicago Law School with her Juris Doctor degree in 1977.[2]

Professional career

Rosenthal was a law clerk for Chief Appeals Judge John Brown in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1977 to 1978. Rosenthal was a private practice attorney in Texas from 1978 to 1992.[2]

Judicial career

Southern District of Texas

On the recommendation of Texas U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Rosenthal was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas by George H.W. Bush on March 20, 1992 to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089, which was approved by Congress. Rosenthal was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 12, 1992 on a Senate vote and received commission on May 13, 1992. She served as chief judge of the district court from 2016 until 2022.[2] She assumed senior status on December 1, 2024.[1]
