Lena Melendez was born in New York, New York. She graduated from Columbia University in 1999. Melendez’s career experience includes working as a licensed social worker and an Uber driver. She has been affiliated with the following organizations:

|Understanding that housing is a basic human need without which people cannot fight for much else, Melendez has worked closely with community organizations and coalitions that are advocating for tenant rights and equitable land use. She is strong on fighting for small businesses (SBJSA and Commercial Rent Stabilization Act). Melendez is a supporter of equitable education, and expanding mental health services.
