In 2008, after serving five years, Judge Cannizzaro resigned from the 4th Circuit to mount a successful bid for District Attorney of Orleans Parish.[1] On July 27, 2020, Cannizzaro announced that he would not be seeking re-election and would retire at the end of his term.[2]
Education and biographical information
Mr. Cannizzaro graduated from De La Salle High School, the University of New Orleans, and earned his law degree from Loyola University School of Law. Mr. Cannizzaro is married to the former Norma Gonzalez and the two have four children.[3]
Matthis Trial
A case that Judge Cannizzaro ruled in has been appealed to the Louisiana Supreme Court. Jason Matthis was convicted in the 1999 killing of Larry Balderas. After witnesses were heard and closing arguments delivered, Judge Cannizzaro wanted to see the crime scene, which he went to with the lead investigator and prosecutor; the defense attorney got lost along the way. There was no transcript of the conversation at the scene and Matthis was ruled guilty.[4]
