Leslie Stein
Leslie E. Stein was a judge of the New York Court of Appeals, New York's court of last resort. She was nominated to the court by Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) on October 17, 2014, and was approved by the New York State Senate on February 9, 2015.[1][2]
Stein announced on November 10, 2020, that she would retire from the court, effective June 4, 2021.[3] Her term was set to expire on December 31, 2026. To learn more about this retirement, click here.
Education
Stein received her undergraduate degree from Macalester College in 1978 and her J.D. from the Albany Law School in 1981.[4]
Career
Stein began her legal career in 1981 as a confidential law clerk on the Schenectady County Family Court. In 1983, she became a private practice lawyer and worked on matrimonial family law cases until 1997, when she was elected city court judge of the Albany City Court. She then served as an acting family court judge in 2001. That same year, Stein was elected to the New York Supreme Court 3rd Judicial District. On this court, she served as the administrative judge of the Rensselaer County Integrated Domestic Violence Part from 2006 to 2008, and as the chair of the 3rd Judicial District Gender Fairness Committee from 2001 to 2005. She was then appointed to the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division (Third Department) and assumed office on February 11, 2008. She served on this court until her confirmation to the New York Court of Appeals in February 2015.[4]
