Levin Hicks Campbell is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit. He joined the court in 1972 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon. At the time of appointment, Campbell was serving on the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He assumed senior status on January 3, 1992.[1]

Education

Hicks graduated from Harvard College with his bachelor's degree in 1948, and from Harvard Law School with his J.D. in 1951.[1]

Military service

Campbell served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in the judge advocate general corps from 1951 to 1954.[1]

Professional career

Judicial career

First Circuit

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, Campbell was nominated to the First Circuit by President Richard Nixon on June 15, 1972, to a seat vacated by Judge Bailey Aldrich. Campbell was confirmed by the Senate on June 28, 1972, and he received his commission on June 30, 1972. Campbell served as chief judge of the First Circuit from 1983 to 1990. He assumed senior status on January 3, 1992.[1]

District of Massachusetts

Campbell served in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, Campbell was nominated to that court by President Richard Nixon on November 12, 1971, to fill a seat vacated by Judge Charles Wyzanski. He was confirmed by the Senate on November 23, 1971, and he received his commission on November 30, 1971. His service on this court ended on August 31, 1972.[1] Campbell was succeeded in this position by Judge Frank Freedman.
