This measure was not put on an election ballot |
A Lexington City Council Elections Referendum was not on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Davidson County,North Carolina, for voters in the City of Lexington.
The measure sought to change the way that members of the Lexington City Council are elected to office. Currently, six members of the city council are elected from each of six wards, while two are elected as at-large representatives. If the measure passes, all city council members would instead be elected by an "at-large" system.[1]
Lexington, the county seat of Davidson County, has about 20,000 residents.
Support for change
In October 2008, members of Citizens Against Forced Annexation (CAFA) started circulating a petition to change to an "at-large" system. They must have 1,020 signatures from registered voters to force an election. According to Mike Bralkowski, the group has gathered about 2,000 signatures.[1]
CAFA's motivation for the petition springs from the fact that in October 2008, the city council voted to annex 2,000 county residents over their objections.
