Campaign themes

2017

McCabe's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

MTA Accountability
As a City Council Member, Liam will hold the MTA accountable for insufficient, inadequate service and price gouging. The MTA is out of control because it has no accountability. We can bring accountability by making MTA board positions elected, not appointed.

The MTA is backlogged by bureaucracy
Repairs are slow, expensive and inconvenient
The 'Bay Ridge Ave R train station is closing for 6 months with no relief planned for commuters
TIME TO HOLD THE MTA ACCOUNTABLE

As a citizen, Liam McCabe has already begun this fight on your behalf by co-sponsoring a petition with Republican Leader Ray Denaro to require MTA Board Members to earn their seats by election, rather than appointment, giving our neighborhoods control

Illegal Home Conversions
Illegal home conversions are tearing at the seams of our neighborhoods and drastically degrading the character of the places we call home. Homes zoned for single and two families are being converted into multiple illegal Single Room Occupancies in Dyker Heights and throughout the district

What’s the problem with illegal home conversions?

Dangerous construction practices make structures unsafe
Fire hazards and public health risks
Eroding property values and quality of life
Overcrowding schools
Maxing out resources like sanitation and emergency services
TIME TO STOP ILLEGAL HOME CONVERSIONS BEFORE THEY DESTROY OUR NEIGHBORHOODS

What will Liam do on the City Council to stop illegal home conversions?

Bring the Department of Sanitation, the FDNY, the Department of Buildings, the Administration for Children’s Services, Department of Environmental Protection, and other agencies together to discuss how to meet the needs of business owners and residents neighborhoods with illegal conversions.
Make it a priority to work with community leaders, the New York City Environmental Control Board, and other agencies to stop illegal home conversions.
Push government agencies to look closely at tax records so that landlords of illegally converted buildings who are evading taxes by lying about number of tenants and income are prosecuted and operations are shut down.

Quality of Life
We pay a lot of money and give a lot of heart to live in and be part of the fabric of New York City. There is no reason that we should settle for a lower quality of life at a higher cost in taxes and hidden fees. Some of the things we 'settle for' as New Yorkers are:

Package stealing, graffiti, and litter
Trespassing
Excessive ticketing
Impossible parking
'Gotcha Ticketing'

Liam promises to fight for the rights of homeowners, renters, and their families who must be able to feel safe and comfortable in their homes and neighborhoods.

How can Liam create parking spaces and improve every day quality of life in our neighborhoods?

Get the City to eliminate non-working fire hydrants to free up parking spaces
Put tougher restrictions on commercial vehicle parking on residential blocks
Create parking spaces out of currently unused street space in high volume areas
Limit alternate side parking regulations

It should not be hard to come home at the end of the day. Liam will make sure that it’s not.

Education
Liam McCabe believes that all parents must have the right to access the best possible education for their children, from Universal Pre-K through High School. Liam is a public school parent of a middle schooler and high schooler who knows the system and the struggles of teachers, parents and students.

Our future is only as strong as our children and the schools that prepare them.

Liam is ready to

Give all parents and all children access to what they need to succeed in school
Protect our schools
Work to channel appropriate resources to all district schools
Streamline the delivery of support services to schools
Ensure that accessibility for students with special needs

Crime
The 43rd Council District is a district made up of family communities with a rich, long history of participating in the vitality and character of Brooklyn.

Recent crimes like the 2016 murder in Owls Head Park have shaken the community. We cannot allow an administration that is complacent to crime and that puts our neighbors at risk. Liam is a graduate of the Citizens Police Academy, so he understands better than most how important community relations with local precincts is.

TIME TO PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORHOODS

How can Liam McCabe help make our neighborhoods safer?

Protect individuals and families in our district by supporting local precincts and community policing
Bring resources to our neighborhoods that keep our streets, parks, and subways safe
Support outreach and intervention to keep drug abuse and drug trafficking off our streets and away from our children
Introduce youth programs and addiction prevention and recovery programs
Work with resources and agencies to help support a safer community
Hold fellow Councilmembers accountable for failing to attend critical Council hearings on homelessness, crime, and health

Liam has great respect for the NYPD and will not handcuff the very people who are trying to keep us safe, which has become one of the hallmarks of the current Mayor’s administration.

Jobs & Economic Development
From Bay Ridge to Bath Beach, businesses are working hard to grow and to serve our community.

Our neighborhoods have a lot to gain and a lot to give, which is why he also is also committed to protecting job creation, job placement, and job security. Liam will work directly with City government to make sure that the job seekers in our district have access to the tools, opportunities and services that they need and deserve.

What can businesses and job seekers expect from Liam McCabe?

Work hard to support our thriving business community
Take on unfair regulations and excessive fines that weigh down the entrepreneurial spirit of hardworking Brooklyn business owners
Even the playing field for everyone who is trying to succeed and to maintain their success
Support local BIDs
Organize community job fairs
Support programs to partner schools and students with employers and career opportunities
Hold the Mayor and the City Council accountable to make sure community interests – and not the political classes – are put first

Parks
Our neighborhoods' beautiful parks are one of the many reasons so many people love this area, but recently the parks have slowly fallen into disrepair and filth.

What does Liam want to do to improve on our parks?

Work to build at least one more dog run in the district and improve the two that are already here
Encourage community groups who help to beautify our parks
Rebuild the bocce ball court in McKinley Park

With Liam’s comprehensive vision for District 43, he will keep our neighborhoods’ rich history alive, protect their character, and secure their future for all who call the district home.[3]
