Four seats on the Liberty County Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014. Marcus Scott IV defeated fellow newcomer Lillie Kelly for the District 5 seat held by Harold Woods, who did not file for re-election. Board chair Lily H. Baker, District 4 incumbent Marcia Anderson and District 6 candidate Sampie W. Smith won election without opposition.

Liberty County School System is located in Liberty County, Georgia. The county seat of Liberty County is Hinesville. Liberty County is home to 64,135 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Liberty County School System was the 35th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 10,498 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Liberty County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 17.7 percent of Liberty County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Liberty County was $44,295 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Liberty County was 17.6 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Liberty County Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Six members are elected to specific geographic districts while the board chair is elected at-large. There was no primary election and the general election was held on May 20, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014 and three seats will be up for election in 2016.[3]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[4]
