I am a wife, mother, grandmother, minister, author, life coach and volunteer chaplain among the many positions in the community I serve in. I am the oldest of 13 children children raised by my grandparents. Growing up in Lenoir and Greene Counties, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance from a very early age. My family lived on a farm and I worked every year in tobacco, picking cucumbers and scrapping corn to help supplement family needs. I was fortunate to be a first high school graduate in my family. I also earned several degrees; Mental Health Associate, Lenoir Community College, Bachelor in Special Education, Masters in Curriculum and Educational Supervision and an Ed. S in Educational Leadership all from East Carolina University, Greenville NC. I understand that public education had afforded me the opportunity for gainful employment professions with wages to live above the poverty level all of my adult life. I am a retired educator and small business owner providing services to teens; teaching them how to live free from drugs, violence and suicide ideations.
  • I have proven leadership in education. With over thirty years of experience as a classroom teacher, school administrator, director of education and certified life coach. I have firsthand knowledge of the challenges our schools and community face. I have been on the frontlines advocating for our families, teachers and students helping to improve the quality of their lives mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, spiritually and financially.
  • I am a voice for the underserved. As someone who grew up and is now in as underserved district, I understand the struggles families face. I am committed to bringing real change and ensuing that every student-no matter their background has a voice in Raleigh.
  • I have a vision for a better future! I am running for economic growth, quality education and accessible and affordable housing and healthcare. My campaign is about building a community where everyone had the opportunity to thrive, and I will work tirelessly to make that vision a reality.
I am personally passionate about affordable Housing Initiatives, Support for Living Wage Jobs, Lower Healthcare Costs and Tax Relief for Working Families.
I believe the core responsibilities of a legislative representative is to listen to the people, and take their concerns to Raleigh, develop and fight for policies to improve the quality for life for the citizens of North Carolina.
My favorite book is, "Tools For Teen Transformation, Perfecting your Own Destiny". It is my favorite book because I authored the book! this book is a resource I use to teach teens how to live free from drugs, violence and suicide ideation. This is a best seller, interactive book that bonds teens with their parents, schools and community. It helps teen to accept personal responsibility to become productive citizens,
I ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature is a sense of trust that they both are working for the betterment of the people.
It is quite beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics, however no person has experience in anything until they are entered in the positions. First time legislators bring a certain amount of life experience to the position that has been gained over a number of years.
It is so beneficial to build relationships with other legislators in order to get policies past, it takes votes and you will need to be able to share the same or similar ideas to rally votes.
I was working on call time. I called a donor and talked about my platform. why I was running and made my ask. the donor said to me, "Mam, I have a wife, three daughters, and a mortgage, I make 40,000.00 a year. If I was financially I would love to donate to your campaign. I don't see where I can give anything and I am sorry I can't give." I felt this donor's pain. I felt so sad for this donor and his circumstances. I want to improve the quality of life for all other families in this same shape.
I think the legislature should oversee the use of emergency powers but not be able to grant its use.
The first bill I would introduce is the "Equitable School Funding and Resource Act"
Progressive Turnout Project, Lillian's List, Planned Parenthood,
I am interested in the Judicial Committee and the Education Committee.
A state ballot initiative process would be good for our state because it would be the best strategy to "hear the voice of the people."
