- In reaction to the ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges on June 26, 2015, Lincoln Chafee tweeted, "Congratulations to Supreme Court on today's good ruling for marriage equality!"[1]
- In 2013, Lincoln Chafee penned an op-ed in The New York Times reasserting his support of marriage equality. Chafee wrote, “Much of the argument for and against gay marriage has revolved around the morality of the issue. Each side feels intensely that its position is more righteous than the other side’s. I personally feel that Rhode Island is a better state, and America is a better country, when we are as inclusive as possible.”[2]
- Chafee applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013. Chafee said, “For the nearly two decades that DOMA was the law of the land in our country, discrimination and unequal treatment were, regrettably, given legal legitimacy.”[3]
- In 2000, Chafee co-sponsored an amendment which expanded the definition of hate crime to include sexual orientation.[4]
