Fangman was one of four attorneys to apply for consideration to become the next Black Hawk County Attorney in 2015. Then-County Attorney Tom Ferguson resigned on July 1, 2015, to accept a position in the Iowa Attorney General's office. Fangman was working as an assistant county attorney under Ferguson at the time. Fellow assistant attorney James Katcher and two private attorneys—Craig Ament and Mike Lanigan—also sought the seat. While Fangman won the appointment which was set to last until the 2016 general election, she left the position upon her appointment to the district court judgeship three months later on October 23, 2015.[4][5]
