I have lived in Elm City for over 40 years. We have raised our five children here and enjoy our seven grandchildren visiting. I have been a nurse for almost 50 years and have been in many homes as a home health and hospice nurse. I currently teach nursing at Barton College and First Aid and CPR at Nash Community College for the electric line-worker students., and during this time, I have witnessed both the challenges and the strengths of our community. Elm City is not just where I live—it is my home, where I have raised my family, and built relationships. I want to ensure Elm City continues to be a place where families feel safe, businesses can thrive, and neighbors look out for one another. As a nurse, I have spent my career caring for others, listening carefully to their needs, and advocating for their well-being. These same values—compassion, accountability, and service—are what I will bring to the role of Town Commissioner. I know the importance of making thoughtful decisions, especially when people’s health, safety, and quality of life are at stake. With my background in nursing, I know how to remain calm under pressure, analyze problems carefully, and advocate for those whose voices may not always be heard. With my long commitment to Elm City, I bring perspective, dedication, and a strong desire to see our community prosper.
  • Advocacy. As a nurse I have always advocated for my patients and their families. In addition, I have spent many hours at the general assembly advocating for nurses. I will advocate just as strongly for the citizens of Elm City to improve our water and sewage, police protection, transparency from all elected officials.
  • Foster transparency and open communication between town leadership and residents. Financial records need to be maintained accurately and submitted for audits on time. Expenditures should be public information with appropriate bids rather that individual selection.
  • Support public safety, infrastructure, sewer, and clean water systems that protect families. We have just received the highest tax increase in Elm City. As citizens we deserve adequate safety and protection. There have been EPA & NCDEQ violations due to high TTHM levels. In addition, there have been recurring fines for sprayfield overuse impacting groundwater. These and other issues have lead to community distrust of tap water and ongoing health concerns. Continuous police protection has been absent in Elm City and the sheriff's department does not want a contract until the SBI investigation is completed.
Elm City has been on a moratorium since 1998. There needs to be action to correct the sewer issues as well as the water and police problems that we are experiencing. There needs to be more transparency from the elected officials with the citizens of Elm City. Although information should be public, there is a lack of information given to the citizens of Elm City.
The town council represents all the citizens of Elm City, not just those who have connections with the administration and elected officials.
Be committed to seeking solutions to the problems experienced by Elm City citizens. This does entail advocating for funding from numerous sources to correct the sewer and water problems that have been ongoing.
Honesty and caring for others.
My first job was as a nursing assistant in a small, rural hospital. I had been a volunteer for three years before obtaining a paid position. I have worked in hospitals or healthcare for 56 years.
The Bible for all of the wisdom that it imparts.
It is the responsibility of the town council to address all issues impacting the Elm City citizens. Audits need to be submitted on time and the financial records should be organized and balanced without missing funds.
Although it is not necessary to have previous experience in government or politics, it is helpful. While I am not a career politician, I am aware of how the political system should work. The town council members should be advocates for the Elm City citizens and if there is a problem, solutions should be sought.
The skills or expertise that would be most helpful for the holders of this office to possess would be honesty, transparency, and a willingness to seek solutions.
The town council members with the Mayor and administrators should work to ensure that Elm City is a safe place for families and businesses.
Watching my five children grow into wonderful adults.
