Linda Stephens
Linda Stephens was a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. She was appointed to this court by Democratic Governor Michael Easley in 2006; she was defeated in the November 2006 election for that seat but was appointed to another vacancy in January 2007. She was elected to remain in this position on the court on November 4, 2008.[1]
Stephens ran for re-election in 2016 but was defeated by attorney Phil Berger Jr. Her term ended in 2016.
Education
Stephens received her B.A. from the University of South Carolina in 1973 and her J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1979.[1]
Career
Judge Stephens began her legal career in 1979 as a law clerk for the North Carolina Court of Appeals. In 1980, she joined the North Carolina Industrial Commission as a deputy commissioner. She left this position in 1984 to work as a lawyer with the firm Teague, Campbell, Dennis & Gorham, LLP. She became a partner in this firm in 1989 and held this position until her appointment to the court of appeals in 2006.[1]
Elections
2016
Stephens ran for re-election to her seat on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. She faced Rockingham County District Attorney Phil Berger Jr. in the general election.[2]
Court of appeals races are nonpartisan, but candidates are required to state their party affiliation in their candidate filings, and their affiliations are listed on the ballot. Stephens filed as a Democrat, and the Republican Party promoted Berger's candidacy.[3]
