Walker was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on January 26, 2011 by Barack Obama to fill the seat vacated by Beverly Martin. In the press release Obama stated, “Throughout their careers, these distinguished men and women have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to public service. I am confident they will serve the American people with distinction from the District Court bench.”[4]

Walker was rated Substantial Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified by the American Bar Association. You can find her Committee Questionnaire available here.

Walker's nomination was returned to the president on December 17, 2011.[3]

Walker was nominated at the same time as Natasha P. Silas, whose nomination was never supported by the Senators from Georgia. Though Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson supported Walker for the court, the Senate Judiciary Committee viewed them as a package deal and would not let one nomination go through without the other.[5][6]

Early life and education

Walker received a B.S. from Southern University in 1983, an M.S. from Clark Atlanta University in 1987 and a juris doctorate degree from University of Georgia School of Law in 1989.[4]

Professional career

Judge Walker became the Fulton County attorney in February of 1998. She was appointed director of Fulton County's registration and elections office in May of 1999 and became a magistrate judge later that year.[2]
