Linda V. Parker is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Prior to joining the federal judiciary, Parker was a judge of the 3rd Circuit Court (Criminal Division) in Wayne County, Michigan.[1] She was appointed to this position by Gov. Granholm on December 26, 2008 to replace Judge Cynthia Stephens.[2]

In July of 2013, President Obama nominated Parker for a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.[3] Parker was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 12, 2014 by a vote of 60-37.[4]

Education

Parker earned her B.A. in 1980 from the University of Michigan. She went on to attend George Washington University Law School earning her J.D. in 1983.[5][2][6]

On July 25, 2013, President Obama nominated Linda V. Parker to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan to fill the vacancy left by Robert Cleland.[3] Obama commented on the nomination, stating:

These men and women have had distinguished legal careers and I am honored to ask them to continue their work as judges on the federal bench. They will serve the American people with integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice.[5][8]

Parker was rated Substantial Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified by the American Bar Association.

Parker's nomination was returned by the Senate on January 3, 2014 and she was renominated on January 6th by President Obama.[9]

Parker's nomination was reported to the full Senate on January 16, 204 after a 14-3 vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee.[10]

On March 11, 2014, the Senate voted on cloture to end debate on Parker's nomination and take a vote. The vote was 56-42 in favor to end debate, primarily along party lines.[11] Parker was confirmed on a 60-37 Senate vote on March 12, 2014.[12]

Elections

2012

Parker was one of 17 candidates competing for 16 seats on the 3rd Circuit Court. Only one candidate was a non-incumbent. Parker was re-elected with 6.29% of the vote.[13] [14]

Bar association ratings

The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association rated candidates running for judicial office in 2012. Candidates were given one of five ratings: Outstanding, Well Qualified, Qualified, Not Qualified or No Rating.

Parker was rated as Well Qualified.[15]

2010 election

Parker was elected to her appointed seat without opposition in the general election on November 2, 2010.[16]
