Campaign themes

2016

Parkhurst's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Fire House Speaker Mike Madigan

In Illinois, we have rule of one: House Speaker Mike Madigan. Through a complex web of corruption, patronage and special interest cash, Madigan has tightened his grip on power in Illinois. Under his 45-year reign, Madigan and the politicians he controls have driven our state into a ditch with high unemployment, crushing taxes and a mountain of debt.

Madigan has opposed term limits, balanced budgets and all structural reforms of state government.

Now more than ever, it’s clear that Madigan must go.

Lindsay’s first vote as your next state representative will be to fire Madigan. We are in desperate need of bipartisan leaders who will build consensus and make tough decisions to get Illinois moving forward. And that starts with getting rid of Madigan as speaker of the Illinois House.

Balance the Budget

Lindsay knows Illinois needs a balanced budget. Politicians in Springfield should behave as our families do and spend within their means. No more irresponsible borrowing and tax increases. Lindsay opposes Madigan’s reckless, wildly out-of-balance budget that would force a massive tax hike. She will get our state back on track by cutting wasteful spending and growing the economy.

Stop Tax Hikes

Politicians have talked about income and property tax relief for years, but have done nothing. Lindsay will oppose every single tax increase in Springfield and will fight to freeze property taxes.

Create Jobs

Lindsay believes creating jobs and growing our economy is critical to balance the state budget and to put our state back on the path to fiscal solvency. Reducing red tape, opposing tax hikes, and making it easier for businesses to form and expand will grow Illinois’ tax base and allow our communities to thrive once again.

Support Our Schools

Education is the most important thing we do as a community. Lindsay believes children are vital to the future success of our state. She will fight for increased school funding to bolster our public schools and build a strong education for our children.

A ZIP code should not confine a child to a failing school. All children should have access to a quality education of their choice regardless of where they live.

And our communities should not be forced to bail out the horribly mismanaged Chicago Public Schools at the expense of our own schools. Chicago voters and taxpayers should be responsible for reforming their schools and ensuring they’re financially viable.[2]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Illinois

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
