I'm running because I see a need in my community for representation. I'm a Mom with a 4th grader and a kindergartener, fully vested in the future of Cobb County public schools, and I'll fight for the transparency and accountability your family expects. I see the disparities in student equity and think that we can do better. Together we can build on the successes of Cobb schools to make sure we stay future-focused. I will bridge the gap between our community and the Board by listening and amplifying your voice.
I'm very passionate about representation. Currently, only one seat of seven is occupied by a woman. For the voices of moms to be part of the discussion of education, we must be at the table. I believe we must take our return to school very seriously. The health and safety of our bus drivers, food & nutrition team, admin, staff members, and teachers must be a priority. I want to use data to identify barriers to education access so we can address them and improve the success of all our students. I'll encourage vibrant community engagement so I can adequately represent the needs of my constituents.
An elected official must be truthful, transparent, honest, compassionate, empathetic, knowledgeable, and ethical. I'm a mom who saw a need in my community for an advocate and I stepped up to run. The incumbent has been in office for eight years now and won unopposed four years ago. I see the needs of my community both as a parent and as an advocate. Cobb is doing so many things right but, we must always be looking to improve. I'm constantly pushing myself to learn and do more. I'll bring this same motivation and drive to the school board.
Before focusing on my family, I had a career in logistics where I had to develop creative, cost- and time-effective solutions for each unique client. The intensity of work where details matter and solutions aren't easily apparent will directly prepare me for work where every student brings their unique learning needs and money must be budgeted equitably to serve each child's needs. I relate deeply to people. I'm not only going to listen to you, I will hear you and care enough to find solutions or next steps to bring about a resolution. With two kids in their Cobb elementary school, I'm fully vested in the future of Cobb education, and the challenges of modern parenting. Policy isn't removed from my life; it's intrinsically interwoven into everything we do.
The school board's three primary functions are to hire and evaluate the superintendent, approve the operating budget, and set district policy. School board members are the elected representatives of every stakeholder in the district. The community elects the school board member and that person must listen so they can advocate for their constituents. The school board can affect district culture, bringing to the forefront issues and concerns of importance to the community.
School board members are elected as representatives of their individual Post but, once elected, the seven board members speak as one voice for the county. Therefore, my constituents would be everyone in Cobb County, with a specific focus on Post 7 - McEachern, Harrison, Hillgrove High Schools, and most of their feeder schools.
First of all, I'd make myself available to listen to them. I'm solution-oriented so, I'll follow up and see that the concerns are met with an adequate resolution. Our strength is in our diversity and equity can't be an afterthought.
For the School Board to function most effectively, we must work collaboratively with the County Commissioners and our state and local elected officials. By partnering with local community groups, we can help fill in the gaps so all our students have what they need to be successful. We have to bring in the community so our schools have the support and resources they need to offer our students the best educational opportunities.
I listen with empathy. I'm a mom and sympathize with parents. I'm passionate about bringing people together, connecting people who can help one another. I'll see conversations through to resolution and seek answers on their behalf.
