I'm Lindsay. I'm just a regular person who cares about local government. I attend city council meetings for fun, speak during public comment when I feel strongly about something, and pay attention to what our council is doing. I believe a Councilmember should be out in the streets everyday: shopping at local businesses, picking up trash, and building community. That's what I currently do and what I will continue to do if elected. I've been a public servant my whole life; I spent almost a decade in various roles at fire departments in California and most recently worked at the City of University Place as their Permit Manager. I know how a City should operate and will use my experience to improve the way Tacoma operates.
  • Transparency - The Council tries very hard to make the public feel like they are involved in decision making, but in the end they still seem to go with whatever choice they feel is best. It's very frustrating. I promise to always vote for the best interest of Tacoma, even if it's not I personally disagree. I will provide weekly recaps of what happened during Tuesday meetings, so people can be informed without having to watch hours of video. I will make myself available to the public to answer questions and provide clarification on policies that may not be clear.
  • The Budget - Council relies on the City Manager to inform them on how the City is operating. I get frustrated when I watch meetings where it’s clear that departments aren’t operating efficiently. I have been a government employee my whole life and have witnessed firsthand how wasteful Cities can be with their budget. I spent the last year watching Council go through the budget deficit and have been constantly educating myself on how the City spends its money. I question why the City has so many Directors and Managers who get paid over $200,000 per year yet it takes over 6 months to get a building permit, or over a year for Council meeting minutes to get posted. My goal is to improve how departments function.
  • Permits - I've worked with building and fire codes for my entire professional career. If you are wondering if a certain code section applies to you or can't find a specific setback requirement for your property, I can help! I want to be an advocate for small businesses and homeowners going through the permit process because it can be very confusing. Tacoma uses a program called Accela for their permitting and I have years of experience using it. As a Councilmember, I would ask for back end access to the system so I can help you look up where your permit is at in the process.
Planning and Zoning, Climate Change, Homelessness, Police Accountability
Politically - I look up to Bernie Sanders. When I begin to feel like I'm out of my depth, I remember that he knew very little about government when he ran for the first time & he also lost several times before getting elected.
Elected officials need to be impartial and unbiased. Unfortunately, running for office has turned into a business and only the most well-connected and well-funded candidates end up in general elections. We need to take a hard look at candidates and vote for those who actually want to serve and not just use the role as a stepping stone.
I am honest and I'm not a politician. I'm a regular person trying to make a difference in the community. I think we need leaders in office who will actually represent the people.
The core responsibilities of a Tacoma City Council member are to adopt a budget, enact City laws, and make appointments to City boards and commissions.
My first job was working as a Hostess at a creperie when I was 16. I learned how to make a mean cup of mint tea! I worked there for about six months. I ended up quitting because my boss scheduled me to work on Prom Night even though I asked for it off months in advance. Good times!
My relationship with my parents has always been hard. My dad went to prison when I was 7, got out when I was 17, then passed away a year later. My mom wasn't able to provide for my brother and me as a single parent and we were homeless for most of my childhood. I've been in therapy for years and overall feel ok about my circumstances, but as a parent myself now, I do struggle at times with understanding how my mom and dad decided to live the way they did.
While government finances are technically public record, it is difficult and confusing for the average person to sift through all the budget information to make sense of it. As a Council Member, I will learn the ins and outs of the City budget and then disseminate that information to the public in a way that is easy to understand.
