Lisa Allen is the Position 5 representative on the Hillsboro school board in Oregon. She won in the general election on May 19, 2015. Outgoing Position 5 incumbent Adriana Cañas endorsed Allen to replace her.
Over five years after the first proposal was made, it appeared a land swap between Hillsboro School District and neighboring Beaverton School District might finally move forward in 2015. While there was vocal debate in Hillsboro, which was the point of instigation for the proposed district changes, Beaverton had not responded to calls to meet and discuss the change as of late April 2015.
Biography
Allen earned a B.A. in social science from Portland State University and an M.A. in teaching from Webster University. She is an alumna of Teach For America. She is currently a stay-at-home parent and volunteer.[1]

Allen provided the following statement on her campaign website:
“ | What will Lisa’s priorities be if elected?
Our Career and College Pathways Program in HSD has been nationally recognized. It is so important, and we can always improve it. Lisa will advocate for an expanded and improved program that reaches more students. She will fight for greater access to college-level coursework for our students so they have more credits if they choose to attend college. This will make them more likely to exceed in their higher education and decrease the potential debt they will face upon college graduation. Additionally, Lisa will work with the district to increase student access to CTE (career and technical education) and trade training, so students who choose not to pursue college are better equipped to enter a stable, living-wage career when they graduate.
Until we are approaching 100%, our graduation rate should be a focus. As a Board Member, Lisa will visit districts that boast a higher graduation rate than HSD and identify what we might learn from them. Then, she will work with staff to assess the feasibility of making similar, cost-effective changes in our district. Also, increasing access to trade training will help students who don’t see high school as a fit for their life goals stay enrolled through graduation, improving our rates.
Lisa will be an active, engaged, and accessible Board Member. She will hold regular coffee chats to be available to the HSD community, visit each school at least once per yer, attend at least one Parent Club meeting per year per school, and attend as many district and community events as time allows. Lisa supports making more district, school, and curriculum materials available online to increase transparency and accessibility.
Last year, our district was finally able to add funds to the back to the budget, after 6 straight years of cuts totaling $70 million. Lisa will tirelessly lobby in Salem to get a higher K-12 allocation-the funding our kids deserve. She will also use her trained business eye to ensure we are spending the limited funds we do have the right way, to have the biggest impact on our students.[3] |
