Candidate Connection

Lisa Barton participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 8, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Lisa Barton's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. Pass a responsibly funded infrastructure plan to build/rebuild aging water systems, roads, bridges.

2. Protect access to health care and the HELP plan which has provided health insurance coverage to 90,000 Montanans. 3. Pass a bill to protect business owners and deal with the rising number of embezzlements in Montana. This bill would institute a financial crimes registry, provide funding for a forensic accounting unit which could provide support to county attorneys and detectives in the investigation and prosecution of these crimes, fund some education for employers, and protect employers from threat of lawsuit if they tell the truth about an employee who embezzled from them.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I believe in the importance of a quality education -- from pre-K to secondary education to quality vo-tech programs and colleges. I also think that apprenticeship programs should be promoted more as of the best means to provide people with a good paying career without school loans. These programs should be promoted more to low-income workers who are having a difficult time providing for their families and themselves. Most apprentice programs pay fairly well while the apprentice is in training which makes it much more practical for people to make a transition to a different career.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Lisa Barton answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

A good legislator needs to have a the ability to listen to a citizen's problem, ask good questions of state agencies and others who are affected about the issue in order to learn about the issue from many different perspectives, and be able to work with multiple stakeholders to come up with the best solution possible.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I was a bookkeeper for a gas station while I was still in high school and during the next summer, I worked fulltime pumping gas at the station in addition to doing the books.. I started out working for a small business owner and talked to thousands of them in Montana over the course of my career. I feel that we all have a role to play and that government should be supportive of businesses, efficient, and professional in our dealings with the public.[3]
