Biography

Lisa Brayton was born in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. She earned a high school diploma from Mt. Pleasant High School and a bachelor's degree from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1998. Her career experience includes working as a dental hygienist and business owner. As of 2024, Brayton was affiliated with Women Who Care and the Rotary Club.[1]

I am Lisa Brayton! Healthcare worker for 38 years, co-business owner for almost 30 years. Councilwoman, City of Portage, 2 years. Wife to Dan, 25 years, mom of 2 boys, but took on 3 more boys. Charity organizer for 16 years. I love all people.
  • Champion for the Mental Health Crisis! Making mental health a top priority by increasing access to resources, destigmatizing mental illness, being proactive versus reactive, and advocating for comprehensive mental health services. Stop gun violence before it happens.
  • Economics: Creating a robust economy with sustainable job growth, investing in infrastructure to support businesses , and promoting affordable and workforce housing.
  • Education: Ensuring every child has access to a quality education by supporting schools, teachers, and students, and advocating for equitable funding and resources.
Housing, mental health, tax policy, infrastructure, and transportation are the areas of public policy I am most passionate about.
The film/ documentary that I like is FDR: American Badass. The book I like is The Three Roosevelts by James McGregor-Burns and Susan Dunn.Th
The characteristics or principles that are most important for an elected official are honesty, integrity, respect, understanding, peace, service and dignity.
My qualities are honesty, integrity, passion for all people, and a very high work ethic.
I believe the core responsibilities of someone elected to the State House of Representatives are working along side the governor of Michigan to create laws and establish a state budget. The responsibilities of the Michigan House of Representatives include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, lowering and raising taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes.
I would hope my legacy would be one that was set by the example I lead. That people know that I always did the right things, that I listened to them and that I worked tirelessly for them at the State of Representatives.
The Secret, by Rhonda Byrnes, is one of my favorite books.
The biggest struggle for me, was the death of my parents.
The ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature should be built on collaboration, mutual respect, effective communication, and a shared commitment to serving the public. By working together, respecting each other’s roles, and prioritizing the needs of the state, both branches can achieve better outcomes for their constituents.
I believe the greatest challenges over the next decade for Michigan are economic transition and workforce development, infrastructure modernization, environmental sustainability, healthcare access, education improvement, urban and rural development, social equity and inclusion, and technology and innovation.
I do believe that it is beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics.
I do believe that it is beneficial to build relationships with other legislators because in the myriad of ideas better policy is achieved.
I guess I would like to model FDR, or Margaret Thatcher.
My sole focus is on District 40, and serving in the state house.
Recently, Portage was hit by an F2 tornado. The resiliency to help one another was bar none of which I have not witnessed. Although, many folks have suffered greatly the residents have all come together to move Portage, themselves and their neighbors forward with clean up, daily resources and countless donations.
Yes the legislature should oversee or grant the use of emergency powers.
I would introduce a Michigan infrastructure and green jobs act bill.
The committees that interest me are Appropriations, Health Policy, and Education.
I think financial transparency and government accountability are of the upmost importance. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in government. The government should be transparent. Being transparent promotes accountability and provides information for citizens.
I support the current state ballot initiative process.
