|I have lived in this district for over 50 years and I am ingrained in the community.
I have a B.S. in Journalism from the University of Florida, I was the Gulf Breeze Rotary Club Citizen of the Year, I am a member of all the local chambers of commerce and I am in several woman's organizations.- Restore reproductive rights.
It is unconscionable that the Florida legislature banned a family's right to decide how many children they can afford to have when our state refuses to expand Medicaid or accept federal money to feed children. Families are struggling as it is and they will definitely find it hard to afford to keep two incomes and pay over $1,000 per month per child for day care.
Citizens do not have affordable health care, affordable housing or hope that they ever will. How can they decide to add another child to this scenario? - Fund public schools. Our legislature is systematically bleeding our public schools dry, awarding taxpayer money to religious and private schools that do not have to meet the same requirements that public schools do for class sizes, testing and accommodation for mental and physical limitations. Our teachers are among the lowest paid in the U.S. and were unfairly implied to be "grooming" children by having an array of books in their classrooms. The legislature is letting religious fanatics decide what our children learn instead of relying on those who were trained librarians and media specialists. Florida is the laughingstock of the nation for banning books that are considered classics.
- Preserve and protect Florida's environment. Our governor banned the term "climate change" even though our neighborhoods are flooded, there is a forecast for an above-average number of hurricanes and temperatures are breaking records every month. Sticking our heads in the sand will not make this problem go away. We must act now to preserve wetlands and green spaces, limit the amount of single-use plastics that are going into our landfills and waterways and protect drinking water.
needs above your own personal gain. Integrity -- telling the truth. Creativity -- to help solve problems.
Repeal the abortion ban. If we add 87,000 more babies to the population each year, we will need more resources including more day cares, more schools and playgrounds.
Fund our public schools and instill respect for the teachers. The teachers need to be paid commensurate to other professionals in the area. Stop the grift of sending taxpayer money to religious and private schools.
I spoke to a young man who was a recent college graduate who could not find a decent place to live because apartments are upwards of $1,500 per month. I spoke to a 64-year-old who is still working and living in a camper full time because she does not make enough to live near her work.
I spoke to a woman who told me that because her husband was arrested on for not paying a traffic fine, they were in danger of losing everything because they could not afford bail.
