“ | What is your view of the state of the school district?
The Minnetonka School District is an exceptional school district that is nationally recognized for our world-class, child-centered excellence. Minnetonka has record setting results in student achievement at all levels, a solid financial position including a Aaa bond rating, state-of-the-art facilities, innovative programs, and a 98% parent and community satisfaction rate. We cannot rest on our laurels however. We must maintain our efforts to continue to raise achievement and to enhance our schools for today’s students. We must continue to innovate to deliver value to our community and honor the investment of our taxpayers. As our District vision states, “we must have the courage to let go of what no longer serves us, embrace what is required for the future, and advocate for what is best for our children, our community, and our nation.” What is the biggest issue facing your district right now? Minnesota’s ability to be a reliable financial partner for the District is an ongoing challenge. We continue to work strategically on managing our finances in the absence of stable education funding from the State. I’ve been a leader on a team that has positioned Minnetonka to avoid budget cuts since 2005. I’ve driven efforts to lobby for education funding at the State Capitol, to set legislative priorities, to develop and follow enrollment plans, and to institute programs that accelerated achievement to record levels. A solid enrollment plan has been part of the careful financial stewardship by the Administration and School Board. However, as we reach our maximum enrollment, we need to look at other revenue sources. Since the State’s funding of public schools has not kept pace with inflation in the last decade, we must look to our community to help provide the resources needed to keep our schools thriving. What skills and expertise will you contribute to the school board? Elected in 2007, I’ve served as Board Chair, Vice Chair and Clerk. I’ve set agendas, planned Board activities, directed listening sessions, and more. I’m the current Board Liaison to the PTO/A Leadership Council, Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA), and Community Action for Student Education (CASE). I’ve served as a delegate to the MSBA Legislative Assembly and presented at local and national School Board conferences. I’ve served as Liaison to Strategic Planning, ECFE/Minnetonka Preschool Advisory Board, Community Education Advisory Board, Tonka Cares and Tonka Pride. In addition, I’m an active volunteer in the District. I possess the experience, the ability to make an impact, the objectivity, and the drive to do what is best for all children. I have relationships at all levels that allow me to be a collaborative, effective leader who gets results. I know the people, I know the issues, I know how to get things done. Why are you running? I am dedicated to the future of Minnetonka Public Schools. I’m proud to have been a part of the Board Leadership that has delivered record setting accomplishments in all areas, while maintaining a tax levy that is at historically low levels. Minnetonka has practiced continuous improvement and innovation with a per pupil spending level that has been at or below the state average. We have a balanced budget, a Moody’s Aaa bond rating, improved facilities, and successful students. All of these provide an exceptional value to our taxpayers and protect home values in a volatile market. Continuity of effective leadership is critical to organizations in today’s rapidly changing world; I want to continue to bring that to the School Board. Why should you be elected? For more than fourteen years, I’ve been an integral part of implementing Minnetonka’s formula for success. Through my extensive District involvement and eight years on the School Board, I’ve achieved proven results. Minnetonka has nationally recognized student achievement, innovative programming, outstanding community satisfaction (98%), improved facilities constructed with existing resources, Aaa bond rating, and strong enrollment. I’ve moved the District forward as a Board Leader and have children in our schools. I will leverage my in-depth knowledge of the District, my ability to foster dialogue and build consensus, and my established network in the District and Minnesota Legislature. I will work hard, listen carefully, analyze all options, and do what is best for all children. I will ensure we deliver value to our students and our taxpayers.[4] |
