In the United States Armed Forces, the ranks of four-star admiral and four-star general represent the highest levels of military leadership during peacetime. These positions—designated as grade O-10 on the uniformed services pay scale—are established and governed by federal law, including Title 10 and Title 14 of the United States Code.[1][2]
Officers at this level are nominated by the president, confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and typically serve in military leadership positions such as service chiefs, combatant commanders, or senior Department of Defense officials.[3]
Four-star generals serve in the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force, while four-star admirals serve in the Navy and Coast Guard. The statutory limits on the number of active-duty four-star officers and the roles they may occupy are outlined in 10 U.S. Code §§ 601–604 and 14 U.S. Code § 305.[4][5] The responsibilities of these officers include overseeing large-scale operations, shaping national defense policy, and managing the strategic direction of their respective branches.[1]
Please see the table below for a list of current 4-star admirals and generals in the United States. Also note a military official may hold more than one four-star admiral or general title simultaneously. This list is maintained by Ballotpedia and was last updated on June 6, 2025.
