I'm running to bring a new voice and new perspective to our Common Council. I'm a collaborative, next-generation leader who embodies the changing demographics of our district. I've experienced Dane County's housing crisis firsthand and I want to get to work on solutions. I spent the better part of a decade as a journalist in local TV newsrooms around the country; I'll use the communication skills I developed in those roles to better inform, engage, and connect the community.
  • Housing: Our region is experiencing a housing crisis. Simply put, we need more housing — and not just single-family homes and apartments.

While housing units of all sizes and prices help us move in the right direction, we need to put particular emphasis on truly affordable places to live.

The city has a number of tools available to support this, including millions of dollars specifically designated for affordable housing projects. We should use the tools in our toolkit to, among other things, support homeownership opportunities, especially for first-time buyers, and require developers who receive financial support from the city to include affordable units based on the area's median income.
  • Smart growth: Our neighborhoods should be designed in a way that is both: 1. Environmentally Minded: Reducing runoff into our waterways while minimizing flooding concerns, prioritizing growth in existing areas, and conducive to multiple ways of getting around; and 2. Fiscally Sustainable: Providing a suitable tax base to cover long-term needs and minimize future tax increases. They should include a variety of housing types so people can choose to stay in their neighborhood as their lives change. In our business corridors, we must avoid over-building parking areas that generate very little tax revenue and sit unused for all but a couple of days per year.
  • Communication and Connection: As I’ve been knocking on doors across District 3, I’ve talked with people who aren’t aware of all that’s happening in our community and those who feel their voices aren’t being heard. I spent the better part of a decade as a journalist breaking down the complex world of local government and truly listening when community members said what was happening at City Hall wasn’t working for them. I believe we can work intentionally to find more acceptable solutions that balance our city’s many needs. If given the honor of serving District 3 on the Common Council, I will use every tool at my disposal to keep you informed and provide spaces for you to share your thoughts.
Housing affordability and access; planning and zoning; transportation and transit; bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure; sustainability
Elected officials need to be selfless public servants who use their positions solely for the benefit of the community, not themselves. They must listen to constituents -- even when they don't agree -- seek to understand various perspectives, offer perspectives of their own, and make decisions based on the best interest of the community now and into the future. We also need elected officials who treat their constituents, colleagues, and city staff with the utmost respect and civility -- we don't need the bickering and pontificating we see at a national level at City Hall.
I've struggled in the past to feel as if I belong. I've moved frequently my entire life (12 times in a 10-year period, in fact), but once I moved to Fitchburg I felt a sense of belonging and pride that I haven't before. That's one of the reasons I feel so strongly about finding ways to make this city a better place; I want everyone to feel as welcome, supported, empowered, and equipped to succeed as I do now.
My background in local TV news has given me years of practice sifting through documents and meetings to identify the most important topics and details on a wide variety of issues, and then communicating those with the community in a way that makes sense. I know how to ask tough questions to get at the heart of an issue, and I know how to listen and talk to -- not at -- people, which isn't necessarily a common skill these days. My current roles on the Transportation and Transit Commission and as the secretary of my condo board have given me hand-on experience dealing with policy and practice alike.
