Lois Conroy is a judge for Position 44 of the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District. Her current term ends on January 3, 2033.

Conroy ran for re-election for the Position 44 judge of the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District. She won in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Education

Conroy graduated with honors and distinction from the University of Minnesota, Morris with a bachelor's degree in 1994. She spent 1993 as an Engelcliff Scholar at Georgetown University. She graduated cum laude with a J.D. from University of Minnesota Law School in 1997. While there, she externed for U.S. District Court Judge James Rosenbaum.[1][2]

Career

Before being elected to the Fourth Judicial District in 2012, Conroy was a prosecutor with the Minneapolis city attorney's office. She began as an assistant city attorney in 1998 and was promoted to senior status in 2005. While there, she was twice cross-deputized as an assistant prosecutor at the Hennepin County attorney's office. From 1997 to 1998, while the Minneapolis government was undergoing a hiring freeze, Conroy worked as a private practice attorney in corporate and employment law. In 2000, she was an adjunct professor at University of Minnesota Law School.[1][2]

Conroy ran for election to the Fourth Judicial District against Marc S. Berris.[3] She won with 58.36% of the vote.[4]

Selection method

Judges of the Minnesota District Courts are all chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms. Candidates compete in primaries, from which the top two contestants advance to the general election. Sitting judges must run for re-election if they wish to serve additional terms. While party affiliation is not designated on the ballot, incumbency is. Sitting judges who reach the age of 70 while in office are allowed to serve until the last day of their birthday month.[5]

The chief judge of each district court is selected by peer vote for a two-year term.[5]

Judges of all courts are required to be "learned in the law" and under 70 years old.[5][6]
