Campaign themes
2010
Snowe Mello's campaign website lists several main issues:[5]
- Spending - "I have always advocated for spending within our means, rather than spending more than we are taking in. We cannot keep adding debt and expecting to deal with it in some distant future."
- State employee salaries - "The number of state employees who make more than $100,000 is scandalous for a state the size of Maine. The salaries of higher management must be looked at, and possibly lowered."
- Utility and heating costs - " There's no excuse for using Central Maine Power and our telephone bills as a cash cow to fund programs that are unrelated."
- Health Insurance - "We must lower the cost of insurance...Maine's regulations have driven out all but three insurance companies. Because of that we don't have competition, which is needed to drive down cost. We could save greatly by repealing Dirigo. The Maine Legislature must allow people and businesses to purchase health insurance out of state in order to save costs and have lower deductables."
- Welfare - "We must reform welfare. Residency requirements, time limits which mirror the federal model and requiring young people who are healthy in body and mind to work a meaningful job to attain benefits are all reasonable changes."
