Long-time Nevada Senator announces abrupt resignation
January 5, 2011
RENO, Nevada: State Senator Bill Raggio (R), who was first elected in 1972, today announced his intent to resign from the Senate, effective Jan. 15, 2011.[1]
Raggio endorsed Harry Reid in his federal Senate race against Sharon Angle in 2010. This led to Raggio losing his post as Republican Minority leader following the November 2010 elections.[2]
"I spent 18 years (in the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office) and 38 years in the Senate. That’s a long ride," Raggio said.[1]
Across Nevada there was nothing but praise for Raggio, whose resignation caught the new minority leader, Mike McGinness "flat-footed."[3]
Raggio would have been term-limited before the next election.[2]
"We will miss his expertise and depth of knowledge in the redistricting process. I truly hoped that he would have stayed for the session but I wish him the best," McGinness said.[3]
A replacement for Raggio will be named by the Washoe County Commission. According to Nevada law, the replacement must be of the same political party.
