Texas: U.S. magistrate judge Earl Hines officially retires from his long held position on Monday. He has served the Eastern District of Texas since 1984. With almost twenty-eight years on the bench, he is the longest serving active Texas magistrate judge.[1]

Judge Hines has a long family history in the Burkeville area, where he was raised. He received his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin in 1967. After receiving his degree Hines served in the capacity of law clerk, assistant attorney general, and in private practice in Beaumont at the firm of Brown & Hines-where he served from 1972 until being sworn in as magistrate in 1984.[1]

Judge Hines was honored with a portrait at a retirement ceremony held July 15th at Jack Brooks Federal Courthouse in Beaumont.[2]

Attorney Zack Hawthorn from Beaumont will take Hine's place.[2]
