What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
My top 3 priorities are: 1) Bringing a new green economy to Los Angeles, and jobs to District 12 specifically. 2) Working with all the tools of the city to fight the housing crisis. 3) Improving delivery of basic city services in District 12.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
When I became a new mom, I grew concerned about the future my children faced in a world threatened by climate catastrophe. I chose to devote my life to spreading the word about climate change, and engaging in political activism, advocating common-sense solutions. Now I am a Faculty Associate at the Institute for Sustainability at CSUN. I try to inspire my students to take action in their own lives, and get involved in improving their communities.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
I didn't set out to be in politics. I just wanted to play a small role in building a better world for my children, and for the next generation in general. I have been an activist for years. When it became clear to me that this was the best way I could serve my community, I stepped up. I'm not taking corporate PAC money; most of my money comes from public matching funds, and most of the rest from small-dollar donations from in the district. So, when I take public office, it will be the public to whom I'm accountable.
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
I am the only candidate in the race who has dedicated their life to preventing catastrophic climate change.
What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?
The City of LA uses a strong council/weak mayor system, where the Council has most of the power. We also have only 15 councilmembers, unlike a typical large city's 50 or 100. That means our City Councilmembers have districts nearly the size of Congressional districts, and wield a lot of influence over the lives of ordinary people living in their districts. The job comes with a tremendous amount of responsibility.
