Lori Hamilton is a judge for Judicial District 22B of the North Carolina 4th Superior Court Division. She assumed office on January 1, 2019. Her term ended on December 31, 2024.

Hamilton ran for re-election for judge of the Sixth Division of the Superior Court North Carolina 22B Judicial District. She won in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Hamilton was initially a judge for the District 22B Superior Court in North Carolina. In 2018, the North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 717, revising the state superior court. Hamilton's seat on the Sixth Division was absorbed into the Fourth Division.

The North Carolina Superior Courts are split into five divisions and 48 districts. Superior court judges rotate among the districts within their division every six months.[1] However, superior court judges are elected by voters in their district and must reside in the district in which they are elected.[2]

Selection method

See also: Partisan election of judges

The 98 judges of the North Carolina Superior Courts are chosen in partisan elections to serve eight-year terms. From 1998 through 2016, elections for superior court judges were nonpartisan; however, on March 23, 2017, the North Carolina legislature changed the method of election to partisan elections by overriding Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of HB 100. This change was effective with the 2018 superior court elections.[5][6][7][8][9]

The chief judge of each superior court is chosen by seniority.[10]

Qualifications
To serve on a superior court, a judge must be:

  • "learned in the law" and
  • under the age of 72 (retirement at 72 is mandatory).[10]
