Sanders earned a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from Ohio State University. Her professional experience includes owning Sole Proprietor, a contracting service for school occupational therapists, and working as a director for Columbus Volleyball Academy. She and her husband, Mike, have three children.[1][2]

Three of five seats on the Pickerington Local School District Board of Education in Ohio were up for at-large general election on November 7, 2017. Two incumbents ran for re-election. Incumbents Vanessa Niekamp and Lori Sanders were the only candidates to file for the three at-large seats by the filing deadline on August 9, 2017. Five more candidates, Nick Derksen, David Horton, Mark Kenney, Clay Lopez, and E. Gayle Saunders, ran as write-in candidates. Incumbents Niekamp and Sanders and write-in candidate Lopez won the election.[3][4][5]

Sanders stated the ability of being able to communicate effectively with the public and to be able to explain to them how the board examines curriculum, instruction, and assessment. She also said one of her priorities is to avoid asking voters to support a new operating levy for the next "several years."[2]
