Three seats on the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees were up for general election on November 3, 2015.

The seats of Place 5 incumbent Leonel Garza, Place 6 incumbent Sandra Garcia and Place 7 incumbent Darlene Pederson were up for election.[1] All three incumbents filed for re-election. Garza faced challenger Juan Sierra, and Pederson faced challenger Miguel Mendoza. Garcia was unopposed in Place 6.[2] Garza secured another term in Place 5, as did Garcia in Place 6 and Pederson in Place 7.

Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District is located in Cameron County, Texas. The county seat of Cameron County is Brownsville. Cameron County was home to an estimated 417,276 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District was the 101st-largest school district in Texas, serving 10,424 students during the 2012-2013 school year.[4]

Demographics

Cameron County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 15.4 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.7 percent for the state as a whole. The median household income in the county was $33,179, compared to $51,900 statewide. The poverty rate in the county was 34.8 percent, compared to 17.6 percent for the entire state.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Los Fresnos Board of Trustees consists of seven members who are elected at large to three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election for three seats was held November 3, 2015.[6]

A member of the board must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the district. An individual seeking office must be a resident of the state for 12 months and a resident of the district for six months, prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot. The deadline to file for a place on the general election ballot was August 24, 2015.[6] Voters had to register to vote by October 5, 2015, to cast ballots in this election.
