Louis Guirola
Louis Guirola Jr. is a judge on senior status on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi. He joined the court in 2004 after being nominated by President George W. Bush (R). Guirola served as the court's chief judge from 2010 to 2018.[1] He assumed senior status on March 23, 2018.
Guirola is also a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on July 2, 2019.[2]
Early life and education
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Guirola graduated from William Carey College with his bachelor's degree in 1973 and from the University of Mississippi Law School with his J.D. in 1979.[1]

Guirola is also a judge on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. He was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts on July 2, 2019.[2]

Guirola was nominated by President George W. Bush (R) on September 23, 2003, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi vacated by Walter Gex. The American Bar Association rated Guirola Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Guirola's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on November 19, 2003, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on March 4, 2004. Guirola was confirmed on a recorded 92-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on March 12, 2004, and he received his commission the next day. Guirola served as the district court's chief judge from 2010 to 2017.[1][3][4] He assumed senior status on March 23, 2018. He was succeeded by Taylor McNeel.
Federal magistrate judge
Guirola was first appointed to an eight-year term as a federal magistrate judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas beginning in 1993. In 1996, Guirola was transferred to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi to serve the remainder of his term before being reappointed to another eight-year term in 2001. He served in this role until he was confirmed as a district judge to the Southern District of Mississippi in 2004.[1]
