The Louisiana State and Local Officials Participation in Public Retirement Systems Amendment, also known as Amendment 1, was on the ballot in Louisiana on November 5, 1996, as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment. It was approved. This measure proposed to prohibit part-time public officials, such as legislators and school board members, from participating in public retirement systems. This rule would apply to part-time officials elected or appointed after January 1, 1997.[1][2]
