The Louisiana Superintendent of Education is a state executive position in the Louisiana state government. The constitutionally established office is appointed by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and serves as head of the Department of Education.[1]

The current Louisiana Superintendent of Education is Cade Brumley (nonpartisan). Brumley assumed office in 2020.

Qualifications
Qualifications for the superintendent are set by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. They are broken down into three categories - general, experience, and professional skills.[2]

- advanced degree in public administration, education, or related area
- background in the formulation and implementation of public policy
- strong academic background
- Experience:
- proven record of success in administration
- demonstrated ability to achieve positive results
- credibility in his/her current profession
- proven record of team building
- Professional skills:
- proven decision-making skills
- proven leadership skills
- ability to work effectively with the legislature and executive branches of the government, education, business, and civic organizations; and
- outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
Appointments
The superintendent of education is appointed by a two-thirds vote of the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and confirmed by the Louisiana State Senate.[1]
Term limits
The superintendent enters into a contract with the board, who determines the length of the contract, but it cannot extend past the end of the term of office by the members making the appointment. However, the superintendent may serve until the next board makes an appointment.[2]
Vacancies
If there is a vacancy during the regular term, the deputy superintendent fills the position until the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education makes an appointment.[1]
Duties
Article 8, Section 2 of the Louisiana Constitution outlines the duties of the State Superintendent of Education:
He shall be the administrative head of the Department of Education and shall implement the policies of the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the laws affecting schools under its jurisdiction. The qualifications and other powers, functions, duties, and responsibilities of the superintendent shall be provided by law.[1] |
The mission statement of the office is to, "provide leadership and create policies for education that expand opportunities for children, empower families and communities, and advance Louisiana in an increasingly competitive global market."[3]
