Lucas Ramirez is a husband, father, and family nurse practitioner. He met his wife Shara in high school in Fresno, California. They moved to Utah and got married in 1994. He graduated in 1998 from Salt Lake Community College with his ADN. He then received his Bachelor's of Nursing from the University of Utah, while working in the CCU at LDS Hospital. Lucas and Shara moved their family back to Fresno where he received a Master's of Nursing from Fresno State.

When their youngest son was diagnosed with autism at 3 years of age, Lucas' professional focus shifted away from cardiology and toward providing medical care for children with autism. This change in practice took them to Austin, TX. He practiced there at The Johnson Center for Child Health and Development. In 2011 Lucas and Shara moved their family back to Utah to be closer to family.

Lucas is a board certified nurse practitioner with a wide variety of experience, working in areas of cardiology, pediatric bio-medical care, bio-identical hormone replacement for women and men, and prevention/early diagnostic surveillance for the elderly.

Lucas enjoys shooting sports, playing basketball, gluten-free baking, gardening, and playing the guitar. In 2019 he completed his first 1/2 marathon and plans on running his first marathon in San Francisco in 2020. Lucas and Shara have been married over 26 years and have four children - Emma (25), Isaac (22), Elliott (19), and Abram (17).
  • I am committed to confronting the root issues of our community, instead of treating the symptoms. This will bring about lasting healing to our state. As a nurse practitioner, I do this everyday for my patients. I am ready to do this for Utah.
  • I believe Utah can maintain fiscal responsibility while prioritizing the health and education of our citizens. I feel it is important to honor the traditions that make Utah special, while also paving a successful path forward for everyone who chooses to call this great state their home.
  • I am inspired by the way my district values family and community. I want to take these values and share them with legislators at Capitol Hill, so the entire state can benefit.
Healthcare: As a nurse practitioner, I see first hand patients making difficult choices regarding their healthcare. Too often patients are forced to focus on the costs of prescriptions and co pays instead of prioritizing their health. We need to do all we can to decrease costs and increase access. In my experience, the best way to decrease healthcare costs is to focus on prevention. Proper nutrition and exercise habits should be encouraged in our schools, homes, and communities, so that our children can grow into healthy adults.

Education: The solution to improving education in Utah is not an increase of spending, but changing how money is spent. As a state, we need to prioritize valuing teachers who dedicate their lives to educating our children. With an increase of students with learning disabilities or other individual needs in schools, we need to prioritize alternatives routes of success for every Utah child. Local education budgets should be protected and our schools shouldn't have to worry about how they're going to find the money to teach our kids.

Environment: Since Utah has been blessed with beautiful landscapes, we must prioritize preserving this state for the generations after us. We can use our resources in a responsible way and still take advantage of the economic benefits our resources can bring. With proper regulations and local involvement, we can ensure Utah's resources are being protected, as well as utilized for economic growth.
I don't really look up to individuals. I admire how individuals respond and act under certain situations. Compassion, sensitivity, and thoughtfulness are attributes that inspire me when I see them. I guess these are are qualities that I wish came more naturally to me. Everyone benefits when individuals think of others' thoughts and feelings ahead of their own.
Listen to the people of the district. They can take what their district does well to the capital and also find what is working well in other parts of the state and take that back home.
Putting people before politics. I want to be known as someone who worked for the people and was a true public servant.
When I was 10 years old I remember the 1984 Los Angeles summer olympics. I remember the dominance of Carl Lewi and Greg Louganis. That same year I remember the landslide of the Presidential re-election of Ronald Reagan. I remember watching the elections results with my parents and seeing the United States map nearly completely filled with red.
My first paying job was as a paper carrier for the Fresno Bee. I had a paper route for about 18 months in the 6th and 7th grades.
Unbroken by Lauren Hillenbrand. First of all, it was well written. I tend to read mostly non-fiction. The story of Louis Zamperini is something that could not be made up. The struggles that he was able to endure would have crushed most. He is an inspiration. His character and fortitude were unmatched.
Level of Concern by Twenty One Pilots
My youngest son has autism. As a father, I want the best for him in all aspects of his life. He has many talents, gifts and abilities that he blesses our life with everyday. My biggest fear is that he won't get a change to share what he has with others because of his social and communication struggles. Teachers and peers at school have been more accepting of him than I would have imagined. I hope that this acceptance continues in his life past high school.
I believe the House should be more responsive to district needs as representatives are elected every 2 years. The House also has an opportunity to be more diverse in discussion as there are many more representatives within the House vs the Senate.
I do not believe previous experiences should be required. Individuals that want to become involved in their state government should not have to prove themselves with previous experience. The more voices in government the better and all should be welcome who are willing to spend the time and their talents to their community and state.
As Utah continues to lead the country in economic growth, we are going to need to be prepared for the associated population growth and everything that comes with it. New burdens on education, traffic and the use of natural resources could be pushed beyond their current capabilities.
The relationship between these two branches should be built on communication and trust. The legislative branch should always focus on the representing the people and addressing current and future needs of the state. The governor should be in a supportive role as long as both the House and Senate are truly representing the people.
Relationships are key on capitol hill. Individual representatives should make decisions and vote what is going to be the best for their districts. An open dialog and the sharing of opinions concerning matters of the state often bring in new perspectives and could help in decision making. It is difficult to truly hear and take in opposing opinions from individuals with weak relationships.
