- I fought against the flat funding of our public school system in speeches I made as the NLEA union secretary, by circulating petitions, and by collaborating with grassroots organizations. We have been gaining momentum, so now I find myself running for City Council, where the money has been mismanaged. They had approved contractual teacher raises, but failed to provide the BOE with any money for those raises, which resulted in forced cuts of crucial staff and specialized enrichment programming for our kids.
- I believe the city should protect community gardens, maintain parks, and repair existing infrastructure. We pay enough in property taxes to get a real return on investment. Our money should not be going to privatized projects, wealthy profiteers, or corporate tax breaks. It should be coming back to us!
- We should be protecting our immigrant population against threats from ICE. Putting pressure on our state and federal government to make a path to citizenship easier is helpful. However, limiting our local government’s efforts to increase surveillance, protecting privacy, and rejecting those who show up without judicial warrants are efforts we can make here in New London.
I am a NLPS music teacher and the district union secretary for the New London Education Association (NLEA). My passion and activism for a thriving public school system is what led me to run for public office. I am also passionate about ending corporate tax abatements and using our current tax dollars for public services instead.
