Vargas was a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He retired in December 2012 after accepting a job at the San Diego County District Attorney's office.[1][2]

Vargas ran for re-election to the superior court in 2012. As an unopposed incumbent, his name did not appear on the ballot. After the primary election, Vargas was automatically re-elected.[3]
