Candidate Connection

Lydia Hubbell completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Hubbell's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My three top priorities as Councilman are 1. Working to get a budget that works for the city 2. Infrastructure improvements and changes that will support public safety and a better quality of life for the residents. 3. Meeting the educational and other needs of children.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am most concerned at the moment with restoring and maintaining the integrity of our judicial system. We need for our residents to enjoy equal justice under law. Failures in our court system have devastating effects on our children and families and the only real "winners" seem to be the lawyers.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My most important role model is Jesus Christ. He had compassion and sacrificial love and was a wonderful teacher and servant-leader. He also spoke out and took a stand and showed courage of his convictions. He was very effective in his work. He was not universally loved, but he loved everyone. He always did what was right. He didn't pander to anyone, but he was always good and fair. I admire people who have the courage of their convictions and stand up for the less fortunate, people who resist oppression, and people do what is right even when others won't and even when they are made to suffer for "bucking the system." The founders of this country and the abolitionists, suffragists, and the Freedom Riders and other civil rights activists such as Joan Trumpauer-Mulholland and Diane Nash are some people I admire and whose examples I follow.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Rick Santorum's "It Takes A Family: Conservatism and the Common Good" is probably the best book to help people understand where I'm at in my head and heart, politically speaking. I probably agree with 90% of what I read in that book.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I believe characteristics and principles that are important for public officials are honesty, integrity, transparency, humility, courage, perseverance, patience, approachability, responsiveness, self-control, self-sacrifice, and above all this, love for their fellow man.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I believe I possess the following qualities to a degree that will well-equip me to serve my constituents: compassion, honesty, integrity, humility, courage, perseverance, patience, approachability, responsiveness, self-control.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

A Councilman is the voice of their constituents. A Councilman makes determinations for land use and zoning, approves the budget, and participates in the city's legislative process.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would like to leave the city better than I found it, and to inspire others to do the same.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

I remember when

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Holy Bible is my favorite book, as it gives us we need to know how to live and serve and prepare the next generation.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

The greatest struggle in my life is currently my fight to defend parental rights and my little girl's right to associate with loving family members. I have spent the past five years learning about how the family court system and the state fail children and families. My faith in our justice system has been shattered because of my experiences and observations, but I believe we can restore integrity to our legal system, we can hold judges and lawyers accountable when they betray their oaths of office. I will continue to support and defend the Constitution and the rights of families and children even after my daughter is free to love both parents again.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

I do not believe it is necessary for people serving on the council to have experience in the political arena. In fact, I think the less experience in politics, the more effective an official can be in countering corruption and cronyism, and in finding creative solutions to problems that never seem to get resolved because they continue to be approached "the way it's always been done."
