I’m Lydia Millard, a second-generation African American resident raised right here in Minneapolis. Watching my mother dedicate 25 years serving the City of Minneapolis taught me the values of hard work, compassion, and responsive leadership. Ward 10 shaped who I am, from summers spent around Bde Maka Ska to weekends exploring vibrant Uptown streets. This community raised me, and I’m dedicated to giving back.

My professional journey began at McDonald’s, I was also a union-loader at UPS, then continued in customer service at Metro Transit and hotel management, eventually leading into large-scale retail operations at Target. Along the way, I developed essential skills in logistics, budgeting, team-building, and operational management—skills urgently needed in City Hall today. Currently, as Executive Director of the Stevens Square Community Organization, I work directly with residents to navigate local government and implement real solutions.

I know what it means to grow up working class, and I’ll always fight to improve the lives of our workers. As Board Chair of the Partnership and Property Commercial Land Trust, I understand firsthand how critical small businesses are to neighborhood strength and stability. Through volunteer work with Boys & Girls Club, Youth Career Camp, Refugee Baskets of Essentials, and back-to-school backpack drives, I’ve made uplifting vulnerable communities and supporting our youth a core part of my mission.
  • We need to solve Ward 10's public safety crisis. I will partner with the local 5th precinct, community emergency response teams, and other stakeholders to urgently and appropriately address safety concerns including crime, drug use, and behavioral health crises. It is unacceptable that Whittier now leads the city in gun violence, and that we have a city council member who actively works against addressing this crisis. As someone who was raised in North Minneapolis, I know firsthand the impact of good policing. One of my priorities is to improve policing by ensuring that our police force reflects our diversity. You can trust that I will hold MPD accountable for the recommended consent decree changes, with or without federal enforcement.
  • I will bring responsive, inclusive leadership to Ward 10 by truly listening and responding to every constituent who reaches out. I will host weekly conversation hours at local businesses at varying times so that I can connect with residents working all shifts and schedules. Instead of picking and choosing who I listen to, I will actively bring diverse community stakeholders together at every conversation. In an era of rising political extremism and division, I believe Democrats must lead with unity and purpose—choosing collaboration to deliver real results for the people of Minneapolis.
  • I am committed to helping small businesses in Ward 10 not only survive but thrive by improving public safety, reducing construction disruptions, and supporting economic growth. I will champion a unified Business Improvement District along Lyndale and Hennepin Avenues, partner with local organizations across Ward 10 to fill vacant storefronts, and ensure equitable access through thoughtful infrastructure like bike stations, drop-off zones, and ADA accessibility. I will work closely with business owners during all phases of reconstruction projects to ensure we don't lose even more of our great small businesses. I know that building a safer, more vibrant commercial corridor will allow businesses and diverse communities to grow together.
In addition to the three priorities that I mentioned earlier with increasing public safety, improving constituent services, and strengthening our small business community, I am personally passionate about increasing affordable housing, helping our city become more climate resilient, and working to end unsheltered homelessness.
The most important responsibility is constituent services and actually responding to the community. We need a leader that will actually listen to the community and seek them out before making decisions that will impact everyone.
I want to leave the world better than I found it, impact people in a positive way, and give people the courage to believe in themselves so that they can maximize their potential.
