Campaign themes

2014

Hatton-Hodson highlighted why she ran for re-election on her campaign website:

I am running for re-election to the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees because I believe that strong leadership and a clear focus on student achievement is critical to both the future and the economic health of our communities.

Capistrano Unified has survived the worst funding deficit in the history of education. Our district is in a much stronger financial position than it was four years ago and has emerged with a balanced budget, a restored full school year and reduced class sizes.

  • Capistrano Unified’s continued recognition as the highest performing large school district in California as well as having the highest graduation rate in Orange County;
  • Taxpayers receiving millions of dollars in tax relief, including the expiration in 2014 of CUSD Mello-Roos taxes in Rancho Santa Margarita and the early termination of Mello-Roos taxes in Mission Viejo;
  • Partnerships with community and business groups to create programs such as a vibrant organic garden for hands-on learning experiences at Newhart Middle School;
  • Students better prepared for future success in college and in careers because of the increased focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics);
  • Receipt of more than two million dollars in grant funds, which is establishing a challenging science/engineering career academy at Capistrano Valley High School;
  • A partnership with the United States National Parks Services implementing virtual field trips for student experiences such as the thrill of a volcano in real time;
  • Increased options for parents to choose the best learning environment for their children within Capistrano Unified; and
  • The Google Chromebooks technology initiative supporting 21st century learning in our classrooms.

I am not a career politician looking for the next higher office. My commitment is to ensuring quality public education and to expanding opportunities for learning through creative and relevant programs that engage students throughout their academic careers in Capistrano Unified.

I look forward to serving our students and families for four more years. I ask for your support on November 4th![4]
