What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
My main focus in my campaign is to improve quality of life throughout our city. My top three priorities will accomplish this goal and revive our neighborhoods through focusing on: Safer neighborhoods: As Mayor, I’ll create an environment where police and fire work hand-in-hand with our city leaders to keep us all safe – and we must make growing our police force a top priority. Better basic services: As Mayor, I’ll make quality of life the foundation of our city. That means smooth streets, strong city services, well-maintained parks and public spaces, but it also means streets safe from stray dogs, city codes that are enforced, and even safe gas lines. Improving education: To attract tomorrow’s jobs we must enhance and expand our education infrastructure to create job-ready worker that will fulfill future need. As the CEO of a successful public-private education partnership, I’ve got direct experience to make that happen.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
As CEO of Young Women’s Prep Network for the past 5 years, I’ve taken on the vital challenge of helping thousands of public school girls gain a top-notch STEM-focused education and go to college – creating thousands of first-generation college grads and shifting cycles of poverty - and we’re succeeding. To date, our graduates have a 100% college acceptance rate. From my work in education, I’ve seen that investing in people and in our future lifts us all and can shift generational trends. I’ve seen first-hand what can be accomplished with private dollars, but more importantly, with the engagement of corporate mentors. As Mayor, I’ll be an advocate for our schools, working to match every Dallas school with a corporate partner who will adopt the school and be willing to donate money, recruit mentors / tutors, provide internships and promote student success. I’ll work to raise private donations to provide grants to schools who need help funding mental health counselors on campus. And, I’ll lead to create a Dallas Education Task Force to improve communications between Dallas ISD, the city, neighborhoods and to help schools, parents and neighborhoods connect and coordinate support services from non-profits serving education.
