Lynnette Vehrs was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 6-Position 1 of the Washington House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2016

Vehrs' campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Healthy Communities

  • Substance Abuse- There are many reported overdoses that are fatal. We need to build and promote programs that can provide safe and secure care for the drug user and their families. Addiction is a real problem and we need to encourage more to be done
  • Mental Illness- WA is struggling with providing safe and well-staffed facilities. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner along with Psychiatrists are able to deliver professional care. Our state needs to invest in adequately funding mental health
  • Poverty- hunger, homelessness, isolation, need for adequate transportation and child care to give our citizens a step up. Many live from low income wages. There is a lot of stress living from paycheck to paycheck. They are just one crisis away from devastation and being homeless. This can be in the form of a car breaking down, domestic violence, a sick child to care for, and many other situations. These folks feel hopeless and helpless.

Environmental Health

  • Clean water and enough water need consistent monitoring. Our concerns for clean air are just as important. Air and water is the essence for our living. We cannot compromise these elements of our existence.
  • Support alternative energy- Promote and support the solar and wind power industries. Encourage research in other energy sources.
  • Oil/Coal Transport- Need to require all railroad cars to be safe and secure- “de-gas” the oil before transport and use only double lined containers. Do the cars need to go through our city and neighborhoods? Are we enabling the use of fossil fuels by allowing the transport of oil and coal to the west coast?

Educational Support

  • K-12 education needs to be fully funded. No more dragging our feet and kicking the can down the street. Public Higher education must be more accessible. We need to be flexible with schedules, locations, and affordability. By utilizing the community colleges and enhancing the ability to transition into a four year college with be tremendous help for completing peoples’ degree. Education is vital to move folks into good paying jobs and out of poverty.[1]
