MSNBC is a cable news channel and website owned by Comcast NBCUniversal. MSNBC was first launched in 1996 by then-NBC President Tom Rogers as a joint effort between Microsoft and NBC.[1][2]
The network operates 20 news bureaus around the world, which they share with NBC News.[3]
Background
MSNBC is a Comcast NBCUniversal company and was founded by Tom Rogers, who also founded CNBC.[4][2] Rogers was the president of NBC in 1996 when he created MSNBC, which was a joint venture with Microsoft.[2] MSNBC.com is considered a partner of NBC News Digital, which also includes NBCNews.com, msnbc.com, TODAY.com, NBCPolitics.com, Nightly News, Meet the Press, Dateline, Newsvine and Breaking News.[5] Originally, the network was more technology oriented due, in part, to the relationship the network had with Microsoft, who invested $220 million in the company. Microsoft used msnbc.com to test out information distribution networks.[1]
According to the Pew Research Center, in 2014, MSNBC's viewership was around 600,000, whereas CNN was at 500,000 and Fox News was at 1.7 million. MSNBC's revenue growth in 2014 was projected to go down one percent to $501 million dollars compared to CNN at $1.1 billion and Fox News at $2.04 billion. The network's revenue growth has plateaued since 2005.[3] In 2014, MSNBC increased its newsroom investment budget by five percent to $296 million.[3] MSNBC's digital traffic is lower than CNN and Fox; MSNBC got just over 7,000 visitors, while Fox News had 55,500 and CNN had 64,300.[3]
In September 2015, MSNBC went through a reshuffle of organization, which was precipitated by MSNBC chairman, Andrew Lack, who was preparing for a new programming lineup. Part of the shuffle was due, in part, by the arrival of Brian William's return to television.[6]
2016 presidential elections
February 4, 2016 Democratic debate
MSNBC hosted the fifth Democratic presidential primary debate on February 4, 2016. The debate was moderated by Chuck Todd and Rachel Maddow. The debate took place in Durham, New Hampshire, at the University of New Hampshire. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will be the only two participants. The announcement came only less than a week before the debate because the Democratic National Committee wanted to "sanction and manage more debates during the primary schedule."[7]
