Madeline Ryan Smith is a native Georgian, born in Savannah. The first thing her friends and family will tell you is she stays true to her roots and loyal to her commitments. Motivated for practical change in our world, Madeline Ryan Smith has set her standards high, and will not stop fighting until we have become a state that can lead by example into 2023. For her, running for this office means a chance for change, for growth, and to bring new life into rural Georgia. Through supporting our public education system, our family farms and expanding healthcare, District 158 can count on Madeline to give a voice to our district in the Gold Dome, and ensure all of her fellow community members have opportunity for success and prosperity.
  • The Education to Lead - Madeline Ryan Smith received her Bachelor's of Science in Psychology, as well as her Master's of Arts in Social Science. As someone with a passion to help other and a love for all people, Madeline is the best choice to lead us into 2023.
  • Moderate Politics - Madeline knows how important conversation and listening are when it comes to solving problems. Raised in a politically and religiously diverse household, Madeline has the ability to understand all side of an issue, and has been raised with a strong sense of empathy.
  • Part of the Community - Madeline knows what it's like to live near the poverty line, to be unemployed, a victim or crime and what it's like to live with a disability. A leader should be an active member of their community, and Madeline has shown that she's her to lead us, while walking beside us.
Disability Rights and Advocacy - As a disabled woman, Madeline understands what it's like to not have access to the help or resources you need. Expanding access to healthcare financially is a must, but we cannot forget about all the other barriers that exist as well. Rural Georgia has a need for physical accessibility to doctors and medical facilities. Covid-19 has exponentially grown the disabled community, and we must be prepared for the additional expense this will put on the sate and economy. Disabled people need and deserve access to healthcare, education and employment.

Women's Rights - The concept of bodily autonomy and the separation of church in state are two ideals that helped birth this nation. It is our obligation to protect the lives of our citizens, and to uphold the bill of rights, inclusive of the 14th Amendment. Regardless of how we may feel personally about a certain medical procedure, it is not the governments' responsibility to make medical decisions for its citizens, or regulate what medical treatments they are allowed to receive.

Public Education - Children need access to quality education, and teachers need to be paid fairly for the work they do. Quality Education includes technology in classrooms, small class sizes, universal design within school structure, and productive learning environments. These simple constructs are all part of the equation to have successful, high-achieving students that are prepared for higher education.
The most important skill or trait an elected official can have is the ability to actively listen, and empathize with strangers. Elected officials are not elected to push a personal agenda or to share their personal opinion - elected officials are elected to represent the people, their wants and their needs. Consistently communicating is needed in any relationship, but being accessible and open to the people you represent is expected of any politician.
For my first job as a teenager, I was a lifeguard. I started when I was 16, and watched over many pools for 5 years. I loved being at the pool every summer with kids i had grown up with, but it also taught me valuable lessons. Most teen lifeguards never have to make a save, but I had 3. All at different pools in different places. But at 17, having to make decisions about someone else's safety during an emergency really snaps things into perspective.
Anything by Edgar Allen Poe. I think he was a man of many words, before his time.
When I was 8 years old, I was diagnosed with a retinal eye disease that took my vision at 18. Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic condition that causes night blindness, tunnel vision and color blindness. When I became legally blind, I was a freshman in college. I had no disabled friends, and no real support system away from home. Learning how to adjust to life in a rural town without the ability to drive, or even ride a bike took its toll on me as a student. Through my college years I went blind, I lost many friends too early, I had my apartment broken into and turned upside down, I've lost and found parts of myself I didn't even know were missing. Among all the struggle (and trust me, there's been plenty) I have always kept moving forward. I now take my losses in stride, and see them as lessons instead.
