Two of the five seats on the Madison County Schools school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on March 1, 2016.

District 4 incumbent David Vess (R) was running for another term, while District 5 incumbent Jeff Anderson did not file for re-election. Vess lost to challenger Dave Weis (R) in the Republican primary, and Weis won without opposition in the general election. Tyler McKinney (R) withdrew from the race in February 2016 making Shere Rucker (R) the Republican nominee in District 5. Rucker defeated Corrie Beth Wikoff (D) in the general election.[1][2]

Voter and candidate information

The Madison County Board of Education consists of five members elected by district to six-year terms. One seat was up for election in 2014. The district's policy manual states that board members may not be employed by the district during their service on the board. Board members must reside within their electoral districts for at least one year prior to the candidate filing deadline for the election in question.[3]

Prospective board candidates were required to file with county party officials by November 6, 2015. Candidates must be 18 years old and reside in their county for at least one year prior to the election.[4]

Madison County Schools is located in Madison County, Alabama. The county seat of Madison County is Huntsville. Madison County was home to 350,299 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the eighth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 19,741 students.[8]

Demographics

Madison County outperformed the state of Alabama in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 38.5 percent of Madison County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 22.6 percent for Alabama as a whole. The median household income in Madison County was $58,434, compared to $43,253 for the state of Alabama. The poverty rate in Madison County was 12.8 percent, compared to 18.6 percent for the entire state.[7]
