Maggie Nurrenbern’s life of service started long before her time as a Missouri Legislator. After graduating from Smithville High School and earning a bachelor’s degree from Truman State University, Maggie and her husband Gregg volunteered to serve in the Peace Corps in Ecuador, working in education and public health. Maggie returned to Kansas City to earn her master’s degree from UMKC and then went on to teach at University Academy and North Kansas City High School before being elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2020.

As a former teacher, and union and PTA member, Maggie has brought focus and expertise to education policy in the Missouri House. She understands that great schools are the foundation of a strong community.

Maggie has worked directly with law enforcement to ensure our community is protected and treated fairly. Maggie is proud of her family’s legacy of first responders.

As a fourth-generation union member, Maggie will always stand up for a strong economy that works for our families. Maggie is extremely involved in her community including being a board member of Feed Northland Kids, and a member of the Northland and Gladstone Chambers of Commerce, Oakwood Manor PTA and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

Maggie and Gregg have three sons, Luke, Eli and Henry, and a rescue dog named Messi.
  • Maggie supports Amendment 3, ending the ban on abortion and restoring access to reproductive freedom.
  • As a teacher and PTA mom, Maggie knows the importance of quality schools for families in the Northland. Maggie’s experience as a public school educator has given her a unique perspective and understanding of the numerous issues facing educators, families and students. Maggie brings this experience to the Missouri Legislature, where she has garnished a reputation as a champion for public education, standing up for our public schools and teachers to ensure they can provide quality education for each and every student.
  • Maggie believes public safety is critical to the strength of our neighborhoods and our quality of life across our region. Today Maggie works closely with our local law enforcement, seeing firsthand the challenges our communities face. She has worked with local police to advance legislation to allow law enforcement to request assistance from outside agencies. She collaborates with community advocates and first responders to ensure they have the training and resources they need to keep us safe while ensuring our criminal justice system is fair.
Maggie is champion for public education, advocating for increased teacher pay and literacy programs. She also supports affordable healthcare, women's reproductive rights, public safety initiatives, investments in infrastructure, and workers' rights, opposing laws that undermine labor rights.
I'm open-minded and collaborative. I've garnered a reputation of working across the aisle to pass legislation and secure wins for our community.

Rep. Maggie Nurrenbern is from Clay County and represents portions of southwestern Clay County. Prior to her legislative duties, Nurrenbern was a teacher in the North Kansas City School District. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Truman State University and a master’s degree from UMKC. Nurrenbern was a Peace Corps volunteer from 2007 – 2009 in Ecuador. She is a member of the Missouri National Education Association, the Oakwood Community Association, the Gladstone Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. She and her husband Gregg and have three sons and are proud to be active volunteers in the community
  • As a mom, a teacher, and a union member, I understand well that we need legislators in Jefferson City who will advocate for our hardworking families. I am a problem solver. I’m constantly working across the aisle to find compromises and commonsense solutions to the complex issues facing our community and state.
  • I’m running for re-election to fight for public education and advocate for affordable healthcare, to defend our workers’ rights, and to secure funding to fix our crumbling infrastructure.
  • Constituent services and communication is a top priority for me. I am always available to listen to your concerns, whether in person or by phone or email. I enjoy engaging with constituents through town halls and I send regular updates from the capitol to those who subscribe to my newsletter. My office excels at connecting constituents with state services and resources.
Schools are facing severe shortages of teachers and support staff. These shortages will soon begin to have dire consequences on student learning, if they aren’t already. 25% of schools in the state of Missouri have switched to a four-day school week in an attempt to recruit teachers while reducing expenses. The legislature must work with our local school districts to reconfigure the foundation formula, the mechanism we use to fund schools, and increase the state’s share of general revenue towards education.

Access to quality, affordable healthcare continues to be one of the biggest burdens facing Missourians. I will continue to work to fully fund Medicaid expansion and push back against any attempts to implement unnecessary bureaucratic requirements. In the legislature, we must work to craft strategic investments to increase access to mental health services. We can begin by increasing incentives, such as loan forgiveness, for mental health providers.

Escalating gun violence has become one of the most serious problems facing our communities and state. Much of this increase can be directly linked to the rollback of the most basic gun restrictions by the General Assembly, such as a permit to purchase a firearm. I support universal background checks, implementation of red flag laws and the need to close the gun show and boyfriend loopholes. While none of these alone will solve our gun violence epidemic, they are vital to improving public safety for all of us.

As a mom, a teacher, and a union member, I understand that we need legislators in Jefferson City who will advocate for our hardworking families. I'm the product of great public education in the state of Missouri. I graduated from Smithville High School, received my bachelor's degree at Truman State University and my Master's in Education at UMKC. After graduating college, I served in the Peace Corps in Ecuador for two years working in education and public health. I teach at North Kansas City High School and serve as our building representative for NKC-NEA. My husband Gregg and I have three sons and we are proud to be adoptive parents and dedicated volunteers in our community.
  • Now more than ever we need elected officials we can trust. I reflect the values of our community and will fight for commonsense solutions for Northland families.
  • My students and my own children have given me a renewed purpose to advocate for bright futures for kids all across Missouri.
  • Every Missourian deserves affordable, quality healthcare. I will fight to expand access to healthcare & mental health services
As a PTA mom & teacher in the NKC school district, I understand the importance of quality schools. We must support our local public schools & ensure a safe environment for students & teachers.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Missouri

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
