Maine Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge Bond Issue, Amendment No. 4 (1935)

The Maine Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge Bond Issue Referendum, also known as Amendment No. 4, was on the September 9, 1935 ballot in Maine as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment, where it was approved.[1] The measure provided for the issuance of bonds for furnishing and paying any additional funds necessary for the maintenance, interest and retirement of bonds issued by the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge District.[2] This added Section 21 to Article IX of the Maine Constitution.[3]

Text of measure
The language appeared on the ballot as:[2]
“ | "Shall the Constitution be amended as proposed by a resolution of the legislature to provide for a bond issue for furnishing and paying any additional funds necessary for the maintenance, interest and retirement of bonds issued by the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge District?" By Chapter 133 of the Resolves of 1935, it is proposed to amend Article IX of the Constitution, by adding thereto the following section: 'Sec. 21. The state under authority of proper enactment of the legislature may issue its bonds not to exceed the amount of $500,000, payable within 30 years at a rate of interest not exceeding 5% per annum, payable semi-annually, the proceeds to be disbursed for maintenance of a bridge between the towns of Deer Isle and Sedgwick, and for interest charges on, and retirement of bonds issued by the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge District; said bonds to be issued only at such times and in such amounts as may be required to furnish funds additional to the receipts of the Deer Isle-Sedgwick bridge for maintenance, interest and the retirement of bonds issued by the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge District.'
